Oh Sweet Gums, why do you torture us? We started seeing leafy "weeds" sprout up in the backyard along the fence line and thought little of it at first....but then all of a sudden we had a mini jungle out there and knew that action must be taken!
It turned out that the Sweet Gums that had been chopped down and the stumps ground just weren't going to go without a fight. The root systems were still thriving and sending up little shooters all along their paths. A friend recommended trying Round Up on the leaves.....but we just weren't patient enough for that. No matter the size of the little guys they were pretty difficult to rip free from the burly roots, so we had to take matters into our shovel-and-axe-laden hands. After a few hours (and two sessions a few months apart!) of ripping and chopping we feel pretty good about the damage we've done to these beasts. Just for good measure we also drilled holes into the larger pieces of root that we couldn't dig out and poured in some stump killer. Take that!!(Note that the top photo was taken before our dirt mound was completely smoothed out - these bad boys almost hid the whole mound!)
